Facial Cosmetic Procedures > Rhinoplasty
Pre-Operative Instructions and Post-Operative Instructions
The nose is the most defining characteristic of face and is the cornerstone of facial beauty. It can change your appearance more dramatically than any other facial feature.
Rhinoplasty is one of the most common facial cosmetic procedures. Every year thousands of people seek consultations with a facial plastic surgeon regarding the appearance of their nose. There are many reasons why people seek plastic surgery of the nose including heredity, injury and aging. Nasal functions and esthetics are important to one’s well being.
Who Makes a Good Candidate?
For Rhinoplasty, good health and realistic expectations are prerequisites. Understanding the process of nose surgery is also critical. Since there is no ideal nose, the goal is to improve the nasal zone, making it harmonize with other facial features.
Before the nose is altered, a young patient must be fully grown, except in cases where breathing is severely impaired.
Getting the Results You Want.
Dr. Kuhn is trained in ear, nose, oral and maxillofacial and facial cosmetic surgery, enabling him to provide you the highest level of expertise. He will examine the structure of your nose, evaluate what rhinoplasty can do for you and discuss the factors that may influence the outcome of surgery.
During your consultation, Dr. Kuhn may use digital images of your face and profile. He will utilize image altering technology to work with you to develop and understand what may be possible. It is important to note that computer imaging gives an idea of the intended result but may not represent the exact outcome.
Understanding the Procedure.
Incisions are made and the skin of the nose is lifted from its underlying bone and cartilage support system. The majority of incisions are made inside the nose, where they are invisible. Most cases use incisions made in the area of skin separating the nostrils. Next, the cartilaginous and bony structures are modified and rearranged to give a new appearance and improved function.
Dr. Kuhn sculpts cartilage to change the size of the nose. The nose can be shortened or reduced as well as narrowed and straightened. Cartilage grafts can also be used to increase size and form.
The skin is then redraped over the new frame and the incisions are closed. Tape and splint are used as a cast for one week to help maintain the new form.
Safe and Simple Recovery.
If packing is placed inside the nose during surgery, it is removed the morning following the surgery. Your face will feel puffy, especially the morning following surgery. Dr. Kuhn will advise you on nasal care after surgery and pain medication may be prescribed. After surgery you may experience bruising and swelling around the eye area. Ice bags and compresses are used to reduce the bruising and discomfort.
It is crucial that you follow Dr. Kuhn’s directions after surgery. Follow-up care is vital for this procedure to monitor healing. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Dr. Kuhn’s office immediately.
